Clinical study using the GenuTrain OA knee brace
Significant improvements for patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee
From Bauerfeind Life on 20.11.2024
A study conducted in 2024 by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) provides new insights into joint preservation and evidence-based treatment using braces in cases of osteoarthritis of the knee. Stetter et al. substantiated the clinical effectiveness of the GenuTrain OA soft brace in an innovative study design. Results include significantly reduced pain and an increase in intensive physical activity after six weeks of wearing the brace.
Pain diary and digital tracking
Clinical effects of the relieving knee brace were examined in 24 physically active patients suffering from moderate medial osteoarthritis of the knee. On average, the test subjects wore the GenuTrain OA for five hours per day, during their everyday activities and exercise. They documented their level of pain at night, during sitting (pain at rest), and with different degrees of strain. Functional ability was determined using the Six-Minute-Walking-Test. A new activity sensor inserted in the waistband recorded wearing time and energy consumption to differentiate between light, moderate, and intensive physical activity.
Clinical evidence
After six weeks of wearing the GenuTrain OA, pain at night, at rest, and when subjected to strain reduced by more than 40 percent in the test subjects. During the Six-Minute-Walking-Test, they managed a walking distance that was five percent longer. Intensive physical activity increased by 50.6 percent on average. The patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee also reported being less restricted during everyday activities and exercise, as well as noticing an improved quality of life.
The clinical study was published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine. Selected results are available as a digital whitepaper from medical.affairs@bauerfeind.com.
