Boosting the healing process with compression products

Achilles tendon treatment

From Bauerfeind Life on 22.03.2024

Tendons take a long time to heal. The body’s own healing processes need to be stimulated to prevent Achilles tendon problems from becoming chronic. The new AchilloTrain provides comfortable compression and a targeted micro massage – “for the entire tendon,” highlights Anika Stöhr, Supports Product Manager, who is part of the launch team.

life: What’s special about the new AchilloTrain?

Anika Stöhr: Its effect from the insertion at the heel bone to the transition to the calf muscles. Tendons have very few blood vessels, meaning they lack circulation. Irritation and inflammation will heal very slowly, so stimulation is needed. The AchilloTrain’s long friction pad completely surrounds the tendon and comprehensively massages the tissue during movement. Its integrated meandering structure along the tendon has a frictional effect in a transverse direction. This helps improve circulation and loosen adhesions.

Why does Bauerfeind now offer only one support for Achilles tendon compression?

Anika Stöhr: Because the possible relief effects are efficiently combined in this one product. This high-reaching support can be combined with heel wedges. If the calf muscles have shortened or more relief is needed because of acute pain, the heel wedge reduces tension on the tendon. This additional relief can be used flexibly during treatment, simply by inserting the wedges into the shoes. We also offer guided exercises in our Training App, which patients can use between physiotherapy appointments to carry out targeted stretches of the calf muscles.

The new design has a special focus on comfort. What considerations are behind that?

Anika Stöhr: The way back to being able to endure full strain takes time. That means a support must fit well, and donning mustn’t cause additional pain. The new AchilloTrain features a practical expansion zone, and the recessed grips at the top of the pad make it easy to pull the product over the foot quickly. The pad also keeps the central area of the tendon free to prevent local pressure. Furthermore, the knitted fabric in the sensitive instep area is particularly soft.
