Rapid relief for ankle sprains Four products for stability
In the functional treatment of sprained ankles, the four supports from the MalleoTrain range promote recovery and help patients return to being active. Their material and design have now been revised and improved.
No exercise for ages and then back with a vengeance? Or merely glancing at your phone so you missed the protruding paving stone? … It happens quite quickly. The twisted ankle is a common injury like cutting one’s finger: annoying, painful and quickly forgotten. Physicians usually only see patients with an injured ankle if the pain has persisted for several days and swelling or effusions simply will not subside. Or patients report that they have twisted their ankle repeatedly, feel insecure during walking or have adopted a posture to help relieve pain. Only a physician can try to find the cause and discover misalignments, such as valgus foot, weak connective tissue or joint instabilities. If ignored, repeated ankle trauma can lead to chronic instability and, over time, result in secondary damage, including osteoarthritis or hip problems. And if “merely” pushing the accelerator in the car hurts, this is also classed as an impairment during everyday activities. In the functional treatment of an ankle trauma, early use of a support can help recovery and prevent recurring problems. This is where the tried-and-tested MalleoTrain supports come in. They provide rapid and noticeable pain relief, promote the reduction of swelling and effusions and stabilize the joint.
Improved effectiveness and increased wearing comfort
Bauerfeind has revamped the entire product line to improve effectiveness and wearing comfort. All four supports feature the innovative high-low knitted fabric that ensures the perfect fit. This highly elastic and breathable fabric is even more textured for the new product generation, which results in an increased contact surface with the skin. The goal is to achieve a therapeutic effect by applying pressure and intermittent compression to increase the stimulation of mechanoreceptors in the skin, relieve tension and promote circulation. The material used is latex-free, and all four models offer reduced compression on the edges to ensure the support fits without slipping but does not constrict. One area that is often overlooked but is crucial for wearing comfort is the instep of the foot: a soft, air-permeable comfort zone with a larger mesh design has been incorporated here to prevent rubbing or creasing in this sensitive area. Movement is important during the treatment of any ankle trauma. Thanks to the pain-alleviating and stabilizing effect of the MalleoTrain supports, patients feel confident enough to try increased activity and are less worried about pain. A study conducted by Chemnitz Technical University (see p. 28 onwards) now also substantiates this effect: patients wearing the MalleoTrain demonstrate improved balance and stability as well as a more physiological gait. This helps patients intensify exercise therapy and accelerates their return to everyday activities without pain.
MalleoTrain: active stabilization
Following supination trauma, this support alleviates pain, stabilizes the ankle and promotes accelerated reduction of edemas and hematomas. The support features two anatomically contoured pads, the Malleo Pads, positioned on the left and right behind the malleoli, that distribute compression to the surrounding tissue. In cases of mild instabilities, this support offers secure stabilization and helps compensate strain during movement more effectively. The supplied donning aid makes it easier to put on the support.
stabilization and relief of the ligaments
This model without pads alleviates pain, offers stabilization and counteracts recurring sprains. In addition to the medically effective compression knit and the massage effect that promotes circulation, this product provides the ligaments with relief. MalleoTrain S stabilizes the joint using an adjustable strap system made of elastic and non-elastic elements. The strap is wound around the foot and ankle in a figure-of-eight to guide the hindfoot in slight pronation and dorsal extension. The strap material of the new generation is even flatter – this means the support can also be worn in lighter, tighter shoes.
MalleoTrain S open heel:
stabilization and relief of the ligaments
This support without pads has the same design as the MalleoTrain S. In addition, it features a cutout in the heel area which improves ground contact to ensure secure stabilization. This firm ground contact is beneficial when walking barefoot in particular. In Germany, MalleoTrain S and MalleoTrain S open heel can be prescribed using the “green prescription” for over-the-counter products.
MalleoTrain Plus: increased stabilization
and relief of the ligaments
This support alleviates pain and stabilizes the joint, it prevents recurring supination trauma and provides the ligaments with relief. MalleoTrain Plus combines the strap system of the MalleoTrain S with the pads of the MalleoTrain support. Both supports with pads, i.e. MalleoTrain and MalleoTrain Plus, are listed in the directory of medical aids from the German statutory health insurance scheme. They can be prescribed without burdening the practice budget.
Training App Staying active
Bauerfeind offers the Training App for workouts at home to support patients during the recovery phase. Developed in cooperation with physicians and physical therapists, the exercises are precisely adapted to the individual condition. Exercise is incorporated into everyday life, and the increased level of activity allows patients to accelerate their recovery. This application provides workouts that patients can do with all four of the above-mentioned ankle supports to accompany their treatment.

Bauerfeind has revised and improved the four MalleoTrain ankle supports. Wearing comfort as well as the functional material features have been refined. The differentiation of the four supports for the individual areas of use has remained the same: with or without pads, strap system or cut-out.
- The knitted fabric now has a distinctive high-low texture which enlarges the contact area with the skin. Thanks to this micro massage, the mechanoreceptors of the skin can be stimulated even more effectively.
- The materials used are latex-free. Reduced compression on the edges ensures that the product adapts snugly to the body’s contours without constricting. The strap material is flatter now and fits into narrow shoes more easily.
- A particularly soft and air-permeable comfort zone has been integrated for the sensitive instep area, preventing rubbing and creasing.
- The Bauerfeind Training App supports stabilizing exercise at home, thus promoting long-term recovery after sprains and in cases of ligament insufficiency.
